Welcome and thanks for visiting Frosh-Soph Sports.
Especially if you're an athlete at the freshman or junior varsity level, or a
parent, coach, fan or just an enthusiast of this level of games, we're
sure you'll be thrilled by what you find here.
Frosh-Soph exists to shine the spotlight on those athletes in the
underclasses who practice hard and play hard, but unfortunately don't
get very much media coverage (if they get any at all). Now the
spotlight is on those teams and their contests through substantial
stories and images.
There's never a charge for viewing and downloading the game stories.
Spend some time looking around and seeing what we offer you. We look
forward to hearing what you think and how you'd like to see us
improve. Send us a note at reachus@frosh-soph.com .
How It Began
Frosh-Soph Sports began in the fall of 2006 to help fill a need and
desire – to give junior varsity and freshman athletic teams the
coverage they were not likely to receive in their local daily
newspapers.
Due to the shift away from community-based coverage in recent years,
and with the reduction of sports department staffs and the space for
the stories themselves, freshman and JV teams saw nearly total
elimination of newspaper publicity. Members of these teams had to rely
on word of mouth, and perhaps coverage in their school newspapers, for
anyone to recognize these players' accomplishments. Thus the concept
for Frosh-Soph Sports was born.
Frosh-Soph, based in Chico, Calif., tested its appeal by covering JV
basketball, baseball and track competition and e-mailing game stories
to “subscribers” – mostly parents and coaches, but also a few players.
Almost immediately, Frosh-Soph's e-mail was flooded with notes from
parents thanking its creators for the service. Even some varsity
coaches wondered how their teams might receive coverage, as newspaper
stories involving those teams were often very brief. Frosh-Soph had to
turn away those teams, however, sticking to its philosophy of covering
the freshman and JV levels only.
Based on this broad appeal, Frosh-Soph decided to go online in time
for the 2007-08 school year. The website will make the service much
simpler, as users can easily view and print game stories for their
favorite teams.
Individual teams, whether through the coaches, statisticians or
parents, report game scores and provide information needed to create
Frosh-Soph's stories.
Finally, the generous sponsorships from businesses and companies help
support Frosh-Soph's mission and keep it free of charge for users.
